Samalita was born and raised a fifth-generation Californian of Spanish-Mexican descent. Her ancestors traveled north from Monterey, Mexico in the De Anza party, settling in Monterey, California in 1775. When "Sam" moved to New York City, she found plenty of Tex-Mex restaurants, but not the wonderful Californian/Mexican food she grew up on.

She missed her family's recipes, which had been passed down through generations. After many years of cooking these recipes at home for her family and friends, she realized that no existing restaurant provided authentic, delicious and healthy Mexican food at a reasonable price. Thus, Samalita created her own restaurant where she could share this wonderfully fresh food with all her New York friends.
In 2007, Sam opened a new neighborhood restaurant called Samalita's Sunflower Restaurant with Romeo De Gobbi, to serve fresh and healthy California cuisine. Romeo has over forty years of experience, creating and managing various restaurants including Le Cirque, Le Pactole and Limoncello.
With the "Golden State's" Spanish/Mexican influence from the South, exotic Asian and Italian influences from the North, plus farm style cooking from Europe, this food utilizes fresh produce, fruits and nuts native to California. With a variety of seafood from the coast, wonderful vineyards and wines, Samalita's Sunflower Restaurant gives New York a glorious taste of a unique cuisine.

Horrible. Utterly horrible. As an ex pro food critic this just may be some of the worst "food" i have ever placed in my mouth. Its one of those places you walk by and think "wonder why they are still in business. There was a whole paper towel in my burrito, a Whole piece! Worst of all it was crumpled up around something....

We ate there twice thinking maybe it was a bad fluke the first time. I so wish this place was good but its not - its awful. The reviewer below who noted that the guac tastes like eating plain avocado - totally agree. Second time we went we got the Cali style instead but that didn't improve anything. Food is tasteless, freshness is questionable and the "pizza" was one of the grossest things I have eaten in a restaurant.

Prices are expensive for the portions in the area. Food is GREAT. Guacamole, Fajitas, Salsa, Corn chips all superb.

Some of the greasiest, most over-priced food I've gotten from Seamless Web.

Excellent food - but it is pricey. The char-grilled tomato salsa is delicious.

I used to love Samalitas. It's been going downhill and then I got a piece of glass in my burrito. I'll never eat there again

The delivery was quick. We had the California burrito and the Asian steak salad. Both were excellent. I will definitely be ordering from there again.

Way over priced... $13 for a burrito? Salsa was awful. Big thumbs down

This food was awful. We got the guacamole that came in the big stone bowl, assuming it would be amazing and fresh as it was prepared tableside. I don't think they added very much salt or nearly enough cilantro or onion because it tasted like we were eating straight avacado. We then moved on to chicken fajitas which proceeded to be the worst chicken I've ever had. It was like, little bits of chicken that seemed to be seasoned with stir-fry seasoning. In combination with the peppers, it tasted like stir-fry. The 50 dollars we spent on this pitiful 'mexican' dinner was upsetting. If you are looking for great mexican, go across the street to Sabor A Mexico. That's real food.
